Problem/Solution
Design an efficient modern home on a relatively flat 3-acre site near Lake Michigan, in Western Michigan containing abundant trees including mature oaks, cedar, and maple trees. In initial meetings with the client, Wilkens Design Studio was presented with a list of words which the home and design should ultimately reflect. These challenges were coupled with a strong need to have the house carefully nestled amongst the existing landscape while minimizing impact on the natural surroundings - even during construction.
Design Process
The site offered several natural locations for the location of the home based on the client's criteria. Working with the client and an arborist, we chose to site the house and access to the house in a way which limited the cutting of trees to a minimum of 3 (6" diameter or less, non-specimen type) trees, while moving some other higher quality trees to more desirable locations. Early planning with the selected general contractor, clients and arborist has generated a plan for site site access during the construction process in order to maintain the naturalized setting. The house plan has evolved out of the selected location and the client's functional needs. The interior spaces and selection of views were developed in-sync with desirable aspects or views onto the site features - as well as easy ways to access them. In contrast to the natural quality the exterior affords as a backdrop, the interior and house itself will represent a relative contrast. Materials were selected for their durability and efficiency - as well as for their suitability to our harsh environment. Rooms and their functions were located to maximize the enjoyment of the daily path of the sun. Functions such as covered decks are located with a proximity to tree canopies and orientation, a roof deck is located with attention to quiet evenings contemplating the stars.
Result/Economic Impact
This project is scheduled to start construction in November.
